Create a hanging basket

Creating a hanging basket is an easy way to add beauty and greenery to your outdoor space. With just a few simple steps, you can transform any corner of your garden, patio, or balcony into a vibrant display of cascading blooms and foliage.

Lucky for you we have all the essentials you need in store…

You will need:

  • A pen or vivid

  • Coco fibre lined hanging basket

  • A saucer, to fit inside the base

  • California Premium Outdoor Potting Mix

  • ican Slow Food

  • Strong scissors

  • Plants!

Let’s get started!

  1. Draw guidelines

Draw guide lines on the coconut fibre liner so you can see two even halves of the basket. You should be able to identify a top half and bottom half.

2. Mark plant positions

Draw crosses where you would like your plants to poke out. Make sure that they are evenly spread with plenty of room to grow outwards. For example for a 35cm wide basket we fit 4 plants in the top half and 3 plants in the bottom half.

3. Cut holes in liner

Cut a cross at each mark in the liner where your plants will protrude out of. Make sure the hole is big enough to get the plant through but not too big so the liner stays intact.

4. Line bottom of the basket

Place a small saucer in the bottom, this helps conserve water.

5. Fill the first layer

Fill the bottom half of the basket with potting mix and add a sprinkling of ican Slow Food fertiliser.

6. Plant the first layer of plants.

Carefully thread individual flower seedlings through each hole in the liner with their roots on the inside of the basket.

7. Plant second layer

Pour another layer of potting mix and sprinkle more ican Slow Food fertiliser and evenly space another circle of plants so that they sit between the plants of the lower layer, not directly above (similar to step 6.).

8. Plant the top

Fill with potting mix, leaving the top 1cm unfilled to allow space for water soakage. Add more ican Slow Food fertiliser and then plant the top layer, using any taller plants in the centre and trailing plants on the edges.

Hang your basket in a spot that fits the sunlight needs of your plants. Water regularly, deadhead blooms, and feed with ican Fast Food liquid fertiliser every few weeks to encourage growth.

HOT TIP!

Use Yates Water Storage Crystals to boost your soil’s water retention. These crystals store water and release it slowly, helping your plants stay hydrated for longer periods, especially during dry spells.

Not sure what to plant?

When selecting plants, it's important to consider both the light conditions of your space and the look you want to achieve. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right combination:

  • Sunlight: If your basket will hang in full sun, choose sun-loving plants like petunias, geraniums, or calibrachoa. For shady areas, opt for impatiens, fuchsias, or trailing begonias.

  • Mix for Variety: Create a balanced look by combining upright plants for height (like geraniums or lobelia), trailing plants for spillover (like ivy, sweet potato vine, or creeping jenny), and filler plants for fullness (like marigolds or alyssum).

  • Color Palette: Select plants that complement each other in color. Go bold with contrasting hues, or opt for a soft, monochromatic theme for a more tranquil feel.

With just a few plants and simple steps, you can create a beautiful hanging garden that adds life and color to any outdoor space—so why wait?
